Newsreaders
So, I've done no newsgroups since the old PC caught fire.
I have the installer for Gravity here, but I wonder if the move to Vista could be time to make a change.
What do people recommend?

Can I get news on an rss feed?

EDIT It appears the Gravity installer I have won't work - I need something 64-bit. Or instructions on running a compatibility mode of soem sort. Or something.

And relax - newer versions of Gravity run OK. Now I just have to find the bit of paper with my account details.

DW->LJ : crosspost vs rss
DW can crosspost to LJ
DW blogs can be read as RSS feeds - in LJ if you create a name to stick in your FL

The RSS feed comes with a URL which will get people to the original post so they can comment
The crosspost has an optional footer which can include the URL

The footer can explain what's going on
The feed doesn't

And in my last test, the crosspost took under a minute, but the feed took 80 minutes to arrive at LJ though it could be seen in other readers long before that. Odd.

Crosspost wins, if all you want is to dup from DW to LJ, then.

Cat
You can't help worrying a bit when the cat pukes, and the litter trays show a couple of big wees and a touch of diarhoea, and he ignores breakfast and lunch, and generally sits about looking mopy.
He went out for a long time, and when he came back he had a bit of dry food.
I suppose he ate something that disagreed with him - possibly a shrew... or drank some bad water or soemthing. Or it could be a bug. Nothing serious, I guess.
When I was raspberrying, I saw a cat that was scary thin, if I'd seen it in our garden I'd have fed it probably, looked starved rather than ill. Smogg will never starve as long as there are shrews and mice about. Though he will have to get the idea that they're edible (except for the green wobbly bit)

Gleaning
Picked 1.160kg of wild raspberries today.
What's in the back garden should get that up to 1.500kg easily.
Jam, or raspberry vodka???
Both, perhaps.

ahhhh....
Maybe if I'd tried plugging in to the backpanel USB sockets I'd have been able to see it from Ubuntu or the UBCD yesterday.
Anyway, new Windows on, copying of files to external HD in progress.
When I put its own HD back in the Celeron I must see if I can work out why the frontpanel USB ports aren't working. Maybe it's a 1.0/1.1/2.0 thang.

damn
Just found the old Celeron machine, unlike most machines I've ever looked inside, has only a single disk drive plug on the IDE cable and doesn't have a spare power line for a second hard drive either.
So I won't be mounting the drive from the machine that caught fire in that as a slave, then.
Which leaves two choices for recovering the data: put it in the Celeron as master, don't want to copy the Windows folder off anyway so that /could/ work; or find somebody who /can/ mount it as a slave.
Hmmmmmm.

University Challenge
I got 170 last night, or maybe 145 if I'm very strict about answering before the teams rather than just knowing it.
Not too bad, anyway.

You're allowed to get bonuses whether or not you got the starter - you assume somebody else on your team got the starter. This does make it a bit easier to rack up a high score.

Today
As pouring a kettelful of boiling water down the sink yesterday hadn't got rid of The Mysterious Smell, I moved the freezer.
Shrew.
Been there a while...
OK bagged that.
Went to Costco and got new PC, which I will set up tonight or tomorrow. Quick panic when the till and the lad working it said £643 but then the voucher went through and it came out at the expected £575. Quite a lot of machine for the money, should do us for a good 5 years.
Got home and found Smogg, presumably outraged at having his shrew removed, had left a bird on the kitchen floor: well, just the inedible bits. He's quite a nice cat, but he does seem to be a bit of a killing machine.
OK bagged that...
Of course it keeps raining a bit every 30 minutes or so, so even though it's baking hot I can't put the washing out.
Got my 160 yesterday and my 161 today, too.

I don't think it's supposed to do that
PC was playing up. With a boot CD managed to find out it was claiming the BIOS wasn't ACPI compatible. Nonsense, and some web forums suggested various reasons this might happen.
Ram problems was one, so I tried reseating it, and lost the video output.
Well, I did the shopping and dropped off some stuff at the church, then tried reseating the ram again and the graphics card as they're close together so I might have knocked it loose earlier.
Power on, and...
It caught fire.
Literally.
Where can I get a PC with XP instead of Vista these days?
