mind the gap
On Friday we went down the M1. It was all fine, really, even in that 15 mile 50mph section - until just before the M25 junction, when everything suddenly stopped. Teh gantry lit up 60, the next one 40, then traffic ground to a halt. As we edged forward we could see people doing odd lane swaps, until eventually we saw why - a car sidways on, another with its nose in the central barrier. A few others parked on the central shoulder, people walking about making phone calls. Must have happened nor much over a minute before we got there.
Coming back up on Sunday much the same thing happened, somewhere just past Luton. Everything slowed to a stop-start crawl, after a mile or so we came across a couple of bent cars.
Don't often get so temporally close to that many accidents in so few days.
Like as not down to tailgating not leaving time to cope with soemthing that happens ahead.

The last trip we made up to Scotland and back on the M6 was pretty horrific, as far as motorway traffic was concerned. The most distressing incident was suddenly encountering a motorbike laid on its side between two lanes, just before some services.

(No sign of the rider, no sign of any recovery vehicles, the traffic just gasped and parted.)

On the way back down, we saw a smoke column from several miles away that turned out to be a car burning merrily on the opposite hard shoulder.

Apart from that, the opposite side of the morotwar was closed twice, IIRC, and had two other accidents on it.

I don't like the M6 at the best of times, but that weekend it really surpassed itself. These days, I prefer the A1, especially now they've taken out almost all the roundabouts beween the A1198 and the M62.

I rather like the A1, but it's a bit far east to use without a pressing reason from where we are for the places we usually go.

Except when we're going up to Sunderland, obv. The A1 is the only sensible way then.

We're east of the A1, so it does actually make a certain amount of sense for northbound journeys. Heading up to Bradford at Easter, it was distinctly nicer than cutting across to the M1 and up that way.

(The SatNav still prefers the M1/M6 route for Holyhead, but I'm wondering what she'd prefer for the 'pool or Manc.)

Southbound, for anything west of Eastern London, the standard route is to the A1 and down, cutting across the corner at Hatfield for the M25 if we're heading west.

I did a similar trip thursday. Got to within 30 minutes of the hotel in Heathrow when my sat nav flashed up.
Traffic on your route. Delay 60 minutes! Would you like to re route??

Erm lemme think. 60 minute delay or come off next junction and add 10 minutes
