So, I've done no newsgroups since the old PC caught fire.
I have the installer for Gravity here, but I wonder if the move to Vista could be time to make a change.
What do people recommend?

Can I get news on an rss feed?

EDIT It appears the Gravity installer I have won't work - I need something 64-bit. Or instructions on running a compatibility mode of soem sort. Or something.

And relax - newer versions of Gravity run OK. Now I just have to find the bit of paper with my account details.

Haven't been on usenet for nearly five years! Before I was so rudely interrupted, it was Gravity that was my reader of choice when using Billyboxen; I doubt very much if newsreader technology has moved on much since.

I'm still using a 2004 release of slrn. Works for me and I use a batch file to transfer the .newsrc file between machines.

Currently all that's left of uly is Maurice Kellett. Either news.individual.net has very good filtering or even the trolls have given up on it.

I still use Gravity when I CBA to fire it up. It ticks all my boxes, so I can't really see a reason to change.

My news/mail client-of-choice has been Agent for ages. Not freeware, bit cheap enough to license and I like it.

Pretty sure it ran under XP x64, but then it would have been running in 32 bit mode. Pretty much everything is still 32 bit - I got rid of x64 from the machines after a bit, as it had too many compatibility issues and no discernible advantage.

Mind, I wouldn't have Vista anyway.

What puzzles me is why you'd want to move to Vista.

That apart, I've used Gravity for years, and had a paid-for licence before it went freeware. I found the more recent versions weren't as good as the one I'd been using, and reverted to the older one. I recommend it unreservedly, and I still may have the installer for it somewhere.

It was on the machine, it works. While I might prefer XP given a bare machine (2000 doesn't support enough these days), I'm not a snob about this stuff - Vista isn't actually that bad, you know.

I got the latest (stable) Gravity release from Sourceforge. Working nicely.
