I could try to look it up, but you lot are out there...
I'm sure it looked browner than this photo shows.
That's a 10p piece, for scale - it was a good 3" long.

Yeh. Most of the pics I Googled up had a more bulbous 'head' behind the 'trunk', but it prolly is. There are other Hawk Moths so I wondered if it mightbe one of them.

There's a website - www.iSpot.org.uk - for just this sort of thing. You upload a photo, have a guess at the name if you can (and the site looks up scientific names for you if you want), then a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs and experts will have a look and confirm the name. Or suggest something else!
