And even more suspiciously, despite everyone saying 52 all the time, any actual pack of cards or calendar year is likely, on average, to have slightly more than 52.
(Off the top of my head, not backed by anything, my understanding is that the current standard deck of cards was influenced by the year, and emerged surprisingly late, like C17th or C18th. My memory is that it gets very muddled with Tarot (both only reaching current form by about C19th), and if one believes in the Tarot, one tends to have Interesting beliefs about the emergence of card decks too.)

That'll be what the jokers are for.
Any idea which suit corresponds to which season (or set of 3 months) ?
Can't think of a way of mapping a Mah Jong tileset to the year...
This correspondence of suits, seasons, and elements shows up a lot over the centuries, in astrology terms, although I have no idea if that date chart has any reasonable provenance.
I'd be surprised if there isn't a known way of doing it with Mah Jong tiles.
There's an awkward number of tiles, though. 3*9 + 3 + 4, even if you chuck in the flowers and seasons you end up with a daft number.
Map them to acupuncture meridians instead, maybe.
