An overwhelming majority of the people I've met who've actually touched code have a degree in /something/.
At one time our CDC Cyber was run almost entirely by astrophysicists, for some reason.

These days, you do seem to need a degree in something, yes. And in some areas, even that's not enough: I chatted to one guy who reckons a Ph.D. is the entry point in his field (in maths, by preference).

In our household, two people who've earned their living from coding, one degree. And that's a Cambridge MA, which is one that requires no actual study, and doesn't actually require a BA beforehand.
